The day starts with us walking to the ferry to the mainland, having one of our travellers sick in the ferry and the van. 16 of us riding in two vans for 2 hours to Valladolid (Colonial Town), to have some lunch. Back in the Van to the Dzitnup Cenote (underground grotto). Lots of children trying to sell us things. Two dogs hump. Kim, I and two others jump in the grotto for a swim. Back in the van, hour over to the Ek Balam Mayan ruins. First construction on site estimated at 250 BC, the buildings pictured probably 1200 AD time frame. Back in the van, 2 hours back to Cancun, one van to the ferry, one to Costco. Exact same as Canada except the giant booze and smokes section. On the ferry and home.

Andy had pre-arranged for a rustic boat trip to take us to Isla Contoy for a daytrip. Isla Contoy is a Mexican national park and bird sanctuary, access to the island is limited to a few areas. Tour groups visit the island to see the birds, some shallow snorkelling and usually a lunch BBQ. Eleven of us set out in the morning from Isla Mujeres aboard a 22 foot, 1960's sail boat under motor power. Our crew Captain Mesh Shirt, Big Kiss Me I'm Irish and Young I Can't Tie a Knot, speaking little to no english. After about 1 1/2 hours sailing northward, we stop to snorkel on the reef, in the 6 foot swells. With no instruction we jump into the ocean wearing our "floatation devices". See lots of fish and coral and manage to all make it on board. Sail another half hour to Contoy for a BBQ lunch on the beach, snorkelling and bird watching. See lots of wildlife pictured. 2 hours later, back on board and sailing for home. 20 minutes from dock, there is a loud clunk and our boat stops moving forward. Our spanish only speaking clue, drops anchor and the big Kiss Me I'm Irish crew member jumps into the ocean to inspect the boat. We sit anchored for about 1/2 hour, as our crew keeps going below and coming up greasy, try to fit a rusted nut and bolt into something. A few boats pass, then finally we (not the crew) wave down a passing boat. They take us aboard, speak english, and serve us lots of drinks (unlike previous self serve vessel). The Cancun day trip, welcomes us all aboard, leaving our crew to fend for themselves on their powerless vessel, returning us to Mujeres on their way back to Cancun. We rejoice that we are home and on land! And that the other vessel did not pirate us or sell Kim to the Cubans!
  • Scooter Tour - Around South Isla Mujeres

This morning Kim and I rented a little 50cc scooter, to tour around the island. Most of the commercial and tourist district is in the north end within walking distance of our hotel. The islanders live in the "Colonias" area in the central area. Along the shore in the south end there are a few attractions and private residences for rent. We went for drive in the morning, the roads are quiet in the south end and there is lots of scenery.

Kim & I still had the scooter, so instead of jumping in a cab, she jumped on the back in her dress and we drove down to the wedding. Very nice, simple beach ceremony on the beach behind "Su Casa" on the South East Coast of Isla Mujeres. Then back up to the north end, for a reception at Na'Balam. Great food and a great band.
  • Playa de Media Luna Hotel

    • The hotel located on the north end of the island, has a main building that has all the hotel amenities and an old original building that houses the Rocas (Rustic) Rooms. Most of the guests stayed in the main hotel with the pool, tv's and telephones. Kim & I stayed in the Rocas rooms. Simple accomodations that are reflected by their pricing.
  • The other days were filled with exploring the town on Isla Mujeres. Visiting the shops, the beach, the pool, the two for ones, and experiencing the night life, and some extra snorkelling.
